MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday, during which the two leaders discussed prospects for a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
A statement from the Chinese government said that Putin briefed Xi on the outcome of US envoy Steve Witkoff’s recent visit to Moscow, as well as developments related to the “Ukrainian crisis.”
Putin emphasised the strength of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and China.
President Xi welcomed continued dialogue between Moscow and Washington, stressing the importance of improving bilateral relations and promoting a political solution to the conflict in Ukraine. He reaffirmed Beijing’s consistent position, pledging China’s ongoing support for peace efforts and diplomatic engagement.
The two leaders also discussed deepening bilateral economic and trade cooperation.
In a separate statement, the Kremlin confirmed that the conversation included a review of the key outcomes of Witkoff’s visit.
“Thanking for the provided information, Xi Jinping voiced support for resolving the Ukrainian crisis on a long-term basis,” the statement read.
The two leaders also discussed key bilateral and international issues, including preparations for President Putin’s upcoming visit to China. The visit will coincide with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and commemorative events marking the 80th anniversary of the victory over militarist Japan and the end of World War II, the statement added.
Earlier in the day, President Putin also held separate phone calls with the presidents of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to discuss similar matters.
Putin is expected to meet with US President Donald Trump in the coming days, with media reports suggesting the summit could take place as early as Monday.
