TEHRAN: Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart, Ebrahim Raisi, during a telephone conversation, discussed Iran’s potential future membership in the BRICS.

Citing the Kremlin, the Russian state news agency TASS reported that the leaders discussed cooperation in regional and international matters, particularly Iran’s potential inclusion in the BRICS. They discussed Iran’s full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (OIC).

BRICS – A Coalition of Emerging Economies

Last year in June, Iran formally applied for membership in the BRICS, a coalition of five emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The BRICS is scheduled to convene in South Africa next month to contemplate its potential expansion.

According to the statement, both leaders also reaffirmed to strengthen bilateral relations especially in areas like trade, transport and logistics, and energy.
