BEIJING: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reiterated their countries’ resolve to robust relationship ahead of the international Belt and Road Initiative forum in Beijing, emphasizing that ongoing “geopolitical tensions” stemming from the war in Ukraine do not hinder their alliance.

In the face of limited opportunities for international cooperation due to current geopolitical challenges, Putin expressed his satisfaction at the continuation and development of ties with several European countries, with Hungary being a notable example. Hungary, a member of both the European Union and NATO, has managed to maintain close relations with Moscow despite the strain caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Hungary’s stance on the conflict in Ukraine has tested its allegiances. Despite EU sanctions on Russian oil, Budapest has impeded the passage of weapons through its territory to reach Ukraine and deepened energy ties with Moscow. Moreover, Hungary is expected to play a pivotal role in Ukraine’s bid to join the EU, positioning itself as a potential opponent to a December vote on accession talks. The EU, aiming to secure Hungary’s support, is considering releasing blocked aid to the country.

Putin and Orban Discuss Various Topics

During their meeting in Beijing, Putin and Orban discussed significant topics such as gas and oil shipments and nuclear energy issues, according to Bertalan Havasi, Orban’s press chief. Orban also emphasized the urgency of ending sanctions on Russia and resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

Putin, one of the prominent attendees, expressed his hopes to align with China’s efforts by forming an alliance with former Soviet Union nations, aiming to achieve mutual development goals.
