LAHORE: Punjab provisional education department has decided to establish a school for the transgender community in the provincial headquarter.

The Punjab government is working to make policies to ensure equal access to education for all citizens of every class and status, including the transgender, who are the most deprived people in society.

The first school for transgender was established in Multan in June 2021 by the Punjab government. After the success of the first transgender school, the Punjab government has decided to expand it to Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, and now Lahore.

According to a 2019 census, the transgender population in Pakistan is around 300,000. It is pertinent to mention here that the actual number could be higher than this. Giving them their fundamental rights is an urgent need, according to the experts. In March 2018, the Senate of Pakistan unanimously approved a bill to protect the rights of transgender and allow transgender to choose their own identities.
