LAHORE: In response to the prevailing cold wave, Punjab’s Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced the one-week suspension of classes for students in grade one and below. Additionally, exams for grades 1-10 have been postponed.

The decision was made during an urgent session at Lahore’s Children’s Hospital, where Naqvi expressed concern over the high incidence of pneumonia among children. He emphasized the need for immediate measures to address the situation.

Naqvi highlighted the alarming statistic that eight out of 10 children are currently battling pneumonia, prompting the directive for schools to stop morning assemblies. He stressed the importance of keeping children with pneumonia at home and urged vaccination for both children and the elderly to control the spread of the illness.

This announcement follows the reopening of schools after winter vacations, which began on December 18, 2023. Earlier, in response to the challenging weather conditions, the provincial government had adjusted school hours from January 10 to January 22, starting at 9:30 am.

Recognizing the persistent cold conditions, the Punjab School Education Department had extended winter holidays for both public and private institutions until January 9.
