ISLAMABAD: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mayo Hospital Professor Haroon on Friday urged parents to exercise extra caution in safeguarding their children against pneumonia. He said that pneumonia cases were increasing cases in Punjab, attributing them to the intensifying cold weather.

In an interview with a private news channel, Professor Haroon emphasized the heightened severity of winter in Punjab this year, posing a threat to the immune systems of children.

He advised parents to ensure their young ones are dressed warmly and to avoid exposing them to the cold, as the winter conditions make children more susceptible to pneumonia due to weakened immunity.

Enumerating the symptoms of pneumonia, he mentioned rapid breathing and the appearance of pitting in the ribs. He urged parents not to dismiss these signs as common fever and to seek medical attention promptly.

According to the Punjab Health Department, there have been 233 pneumonia-related deaths, with 12,719 reported cases in the province this year.

Officials from the Health Department assured the public that diagnosis and treatment facilities for pneumonia are available free of charge in all government hospitals in Punjab.
