LAHORE: Punjab Health Minister Professor Dr. Javed Akram advocated for increased awareness of mental health issues during an event hosted at the Punjab Institute of Mental Health (PINS).
Dr. Akram also announced his unwavering commitment to elevating PINS into a center of excellence for mental health. He stressed that mental health is an inherent right for every individual and urged a greater focus on patients struggling with mental stress. He openly acknowledged the shortage of qualified psychiatrists in Pakistan and the urgent need for improved mental health services, pledging to take action against unqualified practitioners.
Furthermore, he commended the achievements of the Rehabilitation Centre at PINS and encouraged a shift in perspective, suggesting that individuals with mental illnesses should be seen as differently-abled rather than disabled. Dr. Akram highlighted the essential role of counseling in the treatment of mental health patients and praised the organizers for their efforts on World Mental Health Day.

The minister also revealed plans for comprehensive reforms, the introduction of new facilities, and an expansion of services at PINS. He promised to ensure the provision of medicines, diagnostics, accommodation, and free sustenance to hospitalized patients. “The workforce at PINS will be strengthened with an influx of doctors, and efforts will be initiated to enhance the overall well-being of mental health patients,” he added.
Executive Director of PINS, Dr. Farukh Abdullah, thanked for the support and emphasized the significance of World Mental Health Day.
Distinguished attendees at the event included Deputy Secretary Admin, Mirza Walid Baig, faculty members, and patients from the Rehabilitation Centre.
