Staff Report
LAHORE: The Punjab govt has notified a 3-day per week closure of private and public educational institutions and mandatory work-from-home (WFH) for all non-government and government organisations on the orders of Lahore High Court (LHC).
The decision has been taken in the wake of the prevailing smog in Punjab, particularly Lahore, and its devastating effects on its citizens. During a previous hearing, Lahore High Court (LHC) had expressed serious displeasure over the failure of the Punjab govt to contain smog in Punjab. The institutions will remain closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Justice Shahid Kareem had hinted at declaring 3 holidays for all private and public schools and colleges and a mandatory WFH policy for all public and private organisations. On the other hand, Chief Minister Punjab, Pervaiz Elahi, has imposed an environmental emergency in Punjab. The development comes after a deteriorating smog situation in the province.
Chief Minister Punjab directed to control of smog-inducing factors, including brick kilns, stubble burning, and smoke-emitting vehicles in the province. He ordered the anti-smog squad to enforce these directives strictly.
