Punjab Govt Calls in Military to Maintain Law and Order

LAHORE: The Punjab government has called in the military in order to maintain peace and order in the province, local media reported.

A notification about the deployment of armed forces has been issued, which will be implemented under Article 245 of the Constitution.

The notification says that the decision to call in the military has been taken during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee for Law and Order.

The notification has further stated that under the rules, the armed forces will have the powers outlined in Section 5 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, allowing them to detain individuals to prevent crimes in the absence of police.

Earlier, Radio Pakistan reported that the Federal Government has also approved deployment of Pakistan Army troops in Islamabad under Article 245 of the Constitution to maintain law and order with regard to the upcoming SCO summit.

According to a notification issued by the Interior Ministry, the army troops will assist the district administration in maintaining law and order from 5th to 17th of this month with respect to the 23rd meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organization Council of Heads of Government and visits of VVIP delegations for the mega event.
