LAHORE: The coalition parties in Punjab on Friday filed a petition in the Lahore High Court (LHC), challenging the notification issued by Governor Punjab to de-notify Chief Minister (CM) Pervaiz Elahi a day earlier.
In the petition, Elahi’s counsel pleaded to the court to dismiss the governor’s notification. Baligh-ur-Rehman issued a notification on Thursday night to terminate Pervaiz Elahi as Punjab Chief Minister, turning the political crisis into a constitutional one. Soon after the development, Fawad Chaudhry termed the Governor’s move illegal and announced that the party would challenge the notification in court. Fawad Chaudhry further announced that a reference would also be sent against the Governor to the President as part of proceedings to remove him from his office.
Punjab Governor’s notification
According to the sources, the decision to challenge the Governor’s notification was taken in a late-night meeting at the residence of Pervaiz Elahi. The political crisis has deepened in Punjab, with both parties rejecting each other’s stance on the issue, and chances that the matter would finally be decided in the court of law.
It may be recalled that earlier, the PML-N, and PPP had also jointly submitted a no-confidence motion against the Chief Minister Punjab following former prime minister Imran Khan’s announcement to dissolve the provincial assemblies of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
