LAHORE: In an effort to control the outbreak of Pink Eye infections, the Punjab government has taken the decision to shut down all government and private schools across the province for four days.

The move to close schools from Thursday to Sunday period was prompted by the visit of interim Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi to a government school in Lahore on Wednesday. He expressed his displeasure at the presence of students who were affected by conjunctivitis.

Additionally, there will be a public holiday observed nationwide on Friday in honor of Eid Miladun Nabi, as per an official notification.

To prevent the spread of the eye infection, teachers have been directed to conduct health checks of students at the main entrances of schools, beginning on Monday. Students with conjunctivitis, commonly known as Pink Eye, will not be allowed to enter school premises.

Pink Eye Outbreak in Punjab

The incidence of conjunctivitis cases has surged significantly in Punjab and other regions of the country. In the last 24 hours, the Punjab Health Department has reported 85 new cases of conjunctivitis (Pink Eye).

Patients are advised to use prescribed eye drops and tissues for cleansing their eyes, with the option of using cold water for temporary relief. The provincial government’s health department has stressed the importance of using hand sanitizers and cautioned against touching one’s eyes without thoroughly washing hands.

Furthermore, the health department recommends refraining from sharing personal items with individuals suffering from eye infections, including pillows, clothing, medication, and bedding, which should be kept separate. Patients are also advised against reusing facial items.

Considering the upcoming regular weekend, this will result in a total of four days of holidays, which could prove beneficial in curbing the spread of the virus within schools.
