BEIJING: China’s capital Beijing on Tuesday shut parks, shopping malls and museums amid a fresh nationwide spike in COVID-19 cases, reported a news agency.
Many museums and recreational spots such as the Happy Valley amusement park and the city’s vast Chaoyang Park were shut down amid the resurging outbreak.
Beijing on Monday reported 1,438 new local cases, up from 962 the previous day, and warned that the current phase was its most severe test of the pandemic so far.
The authorities tightened rules for entry into the city, requiring those arriving from elsewhere in China to undergo three days of Covid testing before being allowed to leave their accommodation.
The resurging pandemic
Other Chinese cities also resumed mass testing for coronavirus as the country reported 28,127 new local cases nationally on Monday, nearing its daily infection peak in April.
Around half of the fresh cases emerged from the southern city of Guangzhou and the southwestern municipality of Chongqing.
In Beijing, cases have hit a fresh record high, prompting calls for more residents to stay put.
