ISLAMABAD: Recent revelations concerning Rauf Hasan, Information Secretary of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), highlight serious allegations of disseminating sensitive information to foreign journalists and engaging in activities that could undermine Pakistan’s state interests.

The leaked WhatsApp communications between Hasan and Indian journalist Karan Thapar, as well as American journalist Rain Garam, suggest a deliberate effort to propagate an anti-state narrative.

According to the leaked messages, Hasan allegedly shared confidential information about Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, with Thapar. This exchange, which began in November 2022, includes Hasan’s disparaging remarks about the Army Chief and his criticism of Pakistan’s stance on various international issues, including the Ukraine conflict. Hasan’s communications reportedly expressed support for India’s neutral stance on Ukraine, contrasting it with Pakistan’s position.

This criticism extended to accusations of Pakistani military actions and alleged state violence, which Hasan purportedly described as a form of undeclared martial law. His comments on the alleged heavy military presence and a purported upcoming “bloody revolution” suggest an intention to incite unrest and undermine national stability.

The leaked messages have raised concerns among defence analysts who argue that Hasan’s communications were a conduit for spreading anti-Pakistan propaganda. By providing sensitive information to foreign journalists, Hasan is accused of conspiring to defame the Pakistani state and its military institutions.

This situation calls for a thorough investigation to address the potential security breaches and the impact of these activities on national interests.

The situation underscores the importance of safeguarding sensitive information and highlights the need for vigilance against attempts to destabilize the country through foreign media.
