PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday moved the Peshawar High Court seeking contempt of court proceedings against the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Governor over the delay in elections to the provincial assembly.
The petition was filed by KP Assembly Speaker Mushtaq Ghani who said that Governor Haji Ghulam Ali has been accused of violating the constitution and neglecting his constitutional duties by consistently ignoring and disobeying the Supreme Court’s clear directions regarding the scheduling of provincial elections.
The governor’s decision to hold KP elections on October 8 was illegal and unconstitutional, the petition read.
If the polls cannot be held within 90 days, then they should be scheduled as soon as possible, the plea stated. It urged to direct the governor to give a date for KP polls nearest to the 90-day period. The petition also requested the court to direct the Election Commision of Pakistan (ECP) to issue the election schedule as soon as it receives a date from the governor.
The petition further stated that all institutions should be ordered to assist the ECP for holding the elections immediately.
