ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shehryar Afridi has been arrested by the capital police in the wee hours of Tuesday, local media reported early Tuesday quoting police.
Police said that the former federal minister was taken into custody from Islamabad’s Sector F-8 under Section 3 of Maintenance of Public Order (3-MPO). Afridi’s apprehension comes amid the ongoing crackdown on the party’s leadership, activists and supporters in connection with the May 9 violent protests.
In Punjab, another Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Fayyaz-ul-Hasan Chohan was arrested by the police from Liaquat Bagh, Murree Road. He was arrested while going to the press club from Liaqat Bagh.
Furthermore, the Sindh government has declared the house of PTI leader Ali Zaidi as sub-jail. A notification in this regard was issued Monday night. Ziadi was also arrested on May 9 by the law-enforcement agencies following protests in the Baloch Colony area of Karachi.
It is to mention here that the law-enforcing agencies have launched a massive against PTI leaders and workers following the ‘violent protests’ held after the arrest of party chairman Imran Khan in Al-Qadir Trust Case. Violent clashes broke out across Pakistan after former PM and PTI chief Imran Khan was arrested from the IHC premises on May 9.
The protests were held in remote and major cities of the country as well abroad as the party workers agitated over the chairman’s arrest, with Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Islamabad calling in the armed forces to ensure law-and-order situation.
