ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday submitted an amended petition to the Supreme Court of Pakistan over the issue of holding elections in 90 days.
The petition said that the polls should be held within 90 days after the dissolution of the assembly under Article 224-ii, a local news channel reported.
The polls could not be held in Punjab despite the apex court’s May 14 decision. The governor has yet to give a date for polls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the plea read. It added that the elections in both provinces should be held according to the 2017 population census.
The petition further read that the President disbanded the National Assembly on the advice of the prime minister; thus, he has been bound to give the polls date.
Petition Highlights Differences on Election Date
It said that as per the apex court ruling and the Constitution, elections should be held by November 7, 2023. The President suggested November 6 for elections.
President Dr. Arif Alvi invited the election commission for consultation on August 23, but it refused. The electoral watchdog argued that the announcement of the polls date is the mandate of the election commission, it added.
The petition further pleaded that the amendment in Section 57 of the Election Act has been a violation of Articles 48,58,105,112 and 224.
It pleaded that the Council of Common Interest approved the new population census on August 5. The constitution of the CCI was incorrect, with two unelected chief ministers in attendance.
