ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) could be on the cusp of significant changes, with CEO Salman Naseer confirming that discussions are ongoing with franchises regarding potential structural revamps ahead of the next season.
Speaking at an event, Naseer revealed that both the league’s management and the franchises are in talks over various aspects of how the competition is run.
A major topic under consideration is the possible introduction of an auction-style player draft for the upcoming season.
However, Naseer made it clear that no final decision has been taken just yet.
“Everyone needs to be on board with any changes,” Naseer stated. “We’ve spoken about the auction model, but there wasn’t a consensus. There are several matters under discussion, and we’re aiming for complete agreement.”
The idea of shifting from the current draft system to an auction, similar to the model used by the IPL, has been raised several times in recent years.
An auction format could provide teams with greater flexibility in building their squads and potentially generate more excitement around player signings.
PSL reforms
According to Naseer, that is exactly why the decision must not be rushed. All six franchises need to be in alignment before any such reforms can be implemented.
While the auction model has garnered the most attention, Naseer hinted that it is far from the only change being explored for next year’s PSL.
He did not elaborate further but mentioned that there are “multiple items on the agenda” suggesting wider discussions around the league’s overall structure, scheduling, or player retention regulations.
Other likely topics of discussion may include a revised revenue-sharing arrangement, the introduction of two new franchises—as previously suggested—a more expansive fixture list, or even a complete structural overhaul aimed at satisfying team owners and drawing more fans to stadiums.
