KARACHI: Steven Smith unleashed carnage with a blistering 106 off 50 deliveries, propelling Multan Sultans to a formidable 213 against Hyderabad Kingsmen in the PSL’s 33rd match at the National Bank Stadium on Wednesday.

After Hyderabad Kingsmen captain Marnus Labuschagne won the toss and opted to field first, the Sultans made full use of the batting-friendly conditions, with Smith anchoring a monster total that now leaves the debutants with a record chase on their hands.

Smith and Farhan lay the foundation

Sultans got off to a flying start as opener Sahibzada Farhan (66 off 43 balls, 4 fours, 5 sixes) and Smith put together a mammoth 132-run partnership for the first wicket. The Australian looked in sublime touch from the outset, finding boundaries at will.

Smith reached his century in spectacular fashion, his 12th in T20 cricket, laced with 12 fours and 6 sixes, striking at an astonishing 212.00. His innings provided the perfect launchpad for a total that at one stage threatened to cross 230.

Kingsmen fight back late

Just when it seemed the Sultans would run away completely, Hyderabad’s bowlers clawed their way back. Akif Javed was the pick of the attack, returning impressive figures of 3 for 30 in his four overs, including the key scalps of Josh Philippe (19), Ashton Turner (5), and Mohammad Nawaz (0).

Mohammad Ali (1 for 24) and Hassan Khan (1 for 28) kept things tidy, but the damage had already been done by the top order.

Late wobble but Sultans cross 210

After Smith’s dismissal in the 17th over (185 for 2), the Sultans lost wickets in a heap. Shan Masood (1), Arafat Minhas (2), Turner (5), Philippe (19), and Nawaz (0) all fell cheaply as the Kingsmen picked up 5 wickets for just 28 runs in the death overs.

A late cameo from Mohammad Imran (9 off 3 balls, 2 fours) pushed the total past 210, but Multan will feel they left at least 10-15 runs on the table after being 185 for 2 with 3.3 overs remaining.

Chasing 214 for victory, the Kingsmen require the highest successful run-chase of PSL 11. With a century already in the book from Smith, the pressure now shifts to Labuschagne’s batters to produce something special to keep their playoff hopes alive.
