MANIPUR: Imphal East district of India’s Manipur state remained on edge as protests demanding the immediate and unconditional release of detained village volunteers gain momentum.
Demonstrations spread across the region with impassioned protesters, primarily women, blocking traffic and inconveniencing commuters. The arrests occurred following reports of extortion threats, misuse of police uniforms, and impersonation by armed miscreants.
Tensions escalated on Saturday night as agitators attempted to gather at Porompat police station, met with teargas shells fired by security personnel.
Shutdown in Manipur Amid Tense Situation
In solidarity, a joint meeting of local clubs in Imphal West called for a 48-hour state-wide shutdown starting from Monday night. This move aims to intensify pressure on the government to release the five detained village volunteers.
Further actions will be discussed if the government does not meet the demand for their unconditional release. The arrested volunteers are reportedly known for protecting the community from threats, particularly from Kuki militants.
