TEHRAN: Protests that erupted across Iran over economic grievances have largely subsided following a week of crackdown and widespread internet shutdowns, monitors said.

The demonstrations, which began in late December, had briefly drawn large crowds in major cities but have eased as authorities restored control.

Activists reported that internet restrictions, imposed to limit communication and coordination, are slowly being lifted, allowing residents and businesses to resume daily activities.

Streets in Tehran and other urban centers are gradually returning to normal, with markets and public spaces reopening after days of disruption.

Security forces continue to maintain a visible presence in key areas to ensure order, and authorities have encouraged a return to routine life.

The protests in Iran began on December 28, when shopkeepers in Tehran took to the streets to protest the collapsing national currency, rising inflation, and worsening living conditions.

Demonstrations quickly spread nationwide, evolving into large-scale anti-government protests, with scores of deaths reported among both protesters and security forces.

The United States, accused Iranian officials of suppressing public protests, and imposed sanctions including asset freezes and restrictions on financial dealings. Washington said the measures target individuals linked to security and administrative bodies involved in mistreatment of demonstrators.

Iran rejected the allegations, calling the sanctions politically motivated and an interference in its internal affairs. Officials insisted that security forces acted lawfully to maintain order. Analysts say the move is unlikely to change Iran’s domestic policies but may further strain US-Iran relations amid ongoing regional tensions.
