MUZAFFARABAD:  Showing solidarity and advocacy for the Kashmiris’ Right to Self-Determination Day, a series of protest demonstrations, rallies, and marches unfolded in Muzaffarabad and various cities of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Organized events aimed to draw attention to the United Nations’ obligations concerning the resolution of the longstanding Kashmir dispute.

The genesis of the demonstrations traces back to the UN’s historic resolution on January 5, 1949, acknowledging the Kashmiris’ right to shape their future through a UN-sponsored plebiscite. The leaders and activists of the Hurriyet movement spearheaded a protest rally at Burhan Wani Shaheed Chowk in Muzaffarabad, underscoring the importance of the UN resolutions calling for the settlement of the Kashmir conflict and the realization of the Kashmiris’ inherent right to self-determination.

Banners and posters bearing slogans such as “Kashmiris demand the right to self-determination from UN” were prominently displayed during the protest, encapsulating the fervent desire of the Kashmiri people for their fundamental rights. Simultaneous rallies echoed across Neelam and Jhelum valleys, Mirpur, Kotli, and Rawalakot in AJK, with participants passionately urging the UN to take concrete steps towards conducting a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir.

Chants of “Go India go back,” “We want a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir,” and “We want freedom from India” reverberated through the rallies, reflecting the resolute stance against Indian occupation. The protests served as a poignant reminder of the aspirations of the Kashmiri population and their unwavering commitment to achieving autonomy and freedom from external influences.
