Protest Held in US Calling for Gaza Ceasefire

WASHINGTON: Dozens of activists on Monday held a protest outside the US Senate office building stressing for a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

The police took an action against the protestors and held dozens into custody.

The US Campaign for Palestinian Rights and Jewish Voice for Peace organized the protest, that asked the US government to divert funds to domestic priorities instead of further militarizing Israel with US weapons.

An activist was apprehended after he climbed up onto a 51-foot-high black steel sculpture stalled at the US Senate premises. Others chanted slogans calling for an immediate ceasefire.

51 people arrested as a result of demonstration

US Capitol Police said it arrested 51 people as a result of the demonstration.

Sandra Tamari, executive director of the Adalah Justice Project, one of the groups participated in the demonstration said funding more death and destruction of human life makes no one secure, and fuels hatred and war.

According to the Gaza health ministry 18,205 people had now been killed and 49,645 wounded in air strikes on Gaza since Israel attacked the territory since October 7 attack.

The Israeli raids have almost destroyed entire neighborhoods in northern Gaza. Israeli ground troops have been facing heavy resistance from Hamas fighters in the area.

According to the UN some 1.87 million Palestinians, over 80 percent of Gaza’s population, have left their homes.
