NEW YORK: Thousands of protesters have started “Climate Week” in New York ahead of the UN General Assembly session this week demanding President Joe Biden and world leaders to stop use of fossil fuel, Western media reported on Sunday.

Protestors call for Climate Emergency

They were holding placards that read “End Fossil Fuel Use” and “Fossil Fuels Kill” and “Declare a Climate Emergency.”

One of the protestors was dressed as a melting snowman alarming rising sea levels. The message was for world leaders to save the world from the use of oil and gas which according to them is warming the globe.

The protest was part of a week-long international effort by Climate Group, a non-profit whose objective is climate change action and stop global warming.

Same kind of protests have been planned in the 54 countries including U.S, Germany, England, South Korea and India.

Organizers of the protest said that Climate Week NYC has begun.

Many scientists believe that so-called greenhouse gases caused by burning fossil fuels are heating the world and causing severe weather changes such as hurricanes, heat waves, floods, wildfires and droughts.

Carbon dioxide emissions are believed to be key in abating climate change.

The protests also took place before this year’s UN COP28 climate summit, where more than 80 countries agreed to gradually phase out coal, oil and gas.

A recent UN report has said that the world is on a dangerous track of severe global warming, demanding more action on all fronts, including drop in coal-fueled power use by 2030.
