ISTANBUL: Thousands of people held a rally in Turkey on Thursday against the conviction and political ban of Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu.

The protestors were chanting slogans in favor of their demands and also criticizing Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. A Turkish court on Wednesday sent Ekrem Imamoglu to jail and also imposed a ban on him.

Reports suggest that the opposition politician is being considered as a potential challenger to Tayyip Erdogan in the next polls.

The court awarded two-year and seven-month in prison along with the ban for insulting public officials during a speech in 2019. The verdict announces just a few months ahead of scheduled presidential and parliamentary polls in Turkey. However, the opposition in Turkey has not yet decided about its presidential candidate.
