DHAKA, Bangladesh: A violent protest erupted outside the residence of Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin, with demonstrators demanding his resignation over allegations of loyalty to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The protest escalated when hundreds of protesters clashed with riot police while attempting to storm the president’s compound in Dhaka, leaving 30 people injured, including 25 police officers and several protesters.
The protest was sparked by Shahabuddin’s recent remarks in a local media interview, where he admitted he had never seen an official resignation letter from Hasina, who fled to India after the student-led revolution in August. This raised doubts about the legitimacy of her resignation, further fueling public anger.

The protesters, mostly students, argue that Shahabuddin’s ties to the previous regime make him unfit for office and demand a “people’s president.” Student leader Faruk Hossain called for Shahabuddin’s replacement, echoing the sentiments of those involved in the uprising against Hasina’s authoritarian rule.
The protest was eventually dispersed, with student leaders pledging to consult political parties on finding a suitable replacement for Shahabuddin. Meanwhile, security around the president’s residence has been tightened to prevent further clashes.
