DHAKA, Bangladesh: Sharif Osman bin Hadi, the charismatic leader and public face of the July Uprising movement and convenor of the political organisation Inqilab Moncho, has died. The prospective candidate for the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election passed away on Thursday while receiving advanced medical treatment in Singapore.

His death was confirmed in an announcement on the official Facebook page of Inqilab Moncho late Thursday night. The post framed his passing in stark, ideological terms, stating, “In the struggle against Indian hegemony, Allah has accepted the great revolutionary Osman Hadi as a martyr.”

Bangladesh’s Interim Leader Yunus pledged a complete investigation and firm legal action against the perpetrators responsible for the attack on student leader Hadi, who has since succumbed to his injuries.

In a national address, Yunus stated: “I express my profound grief and sorrow over the untimely death of Sharif Osman Hadi.”

Surviving Weeks After Point-Blank Attack

Hadi’s death follows a targeted assassination attempt on December 12. As he was traveling in a rickshaw in Dhaka, two assailants on a motorcycle pulled alongside. One of the individuals shot him at close range before the pair fled the scene.

The attack left Hadi with critical injuries. He was first rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, he was subsequently transferred to Evercare Hospital for more specialized intensive care. After several days of treatment in Dhaka, he was airlifted to a hospital in Singapore in a final effort to save his life.

A “Fiery” Voice in Bangladesh Politics

Sharif Osman bin Hadi had emerged as a leading figure who opposed Indian influence over Bangladesh, best known as the leading voice and convenor of Inqilab Moncho. The group positions itself as a revolutionary platform, with Hadi frequently delivering impassioned speeches that galvanized his supporters and sharply criticised the political status quo. His announced intention to contest the next parliamentary elections marked a significant step for his movement, positioning him as a direct challenger within the formal electoral arena.

Dhaka Court Grants Three-Day Remand for Suspect in Hadi Attack

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court placed Md Nuruzzaman Noman, alias Ujjal, on a three-day remand on Thursday (December 17) in connection with the attempted murder of political figure Sharif Osman Hadi.

Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam passed the order after police investigators argued the suspect had assisted the prime accused, Faisal Karim Masud, by providing a rented car and instructions to facilitate his escape after the December 12 shooting in the capital’s Paltan area. Police sought a five-day remand to identify other conspirators and recover the weapon.
