NEW DELHI: Supporters and activists of Congress—the major opposition party in India — raised the slogans of “Pakistan Zindabad” after the party inflicted a humiliating defeat on India Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s led Hindu extremist Bharatiya Janata Party in vital polls in the southern state of Karnataka, global media reported on Sunday. The development took place outside a counting center in Tilakvadi area of Belagavi, a global media outlet reported.

Pro-Pakistan slogans raised in India

The development happened at Tilakvadi police station where some supporters and activists also shouted “anti-Indian” slogans when Congress candidates secured the win against the BJP.

Earlier, BJP on Saturday accepted defeat in the regional polls in Karnataka, losing its sole stronghold in southern India. BJP had been in power in the state since 2019 and campaigned hard to hold on to it. Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai also admitted the defeat in the elections.  The Chief Minister told the media that they have not been able to win the elections in the state. The Congress party won the Karnataka state polls, giving a major setback to Narendra Modi’s party.

A year before national polls, the BJP had been removed from office in Karnataka, the only southern state controlled by the Hindu extremist group.  In its first official reaction to the Karnataka Assembly election results, the Congress said that Modi had “lost” because the BJP declared its election campaign a “referendum” on Modi. The BJP has begun a massive drive in the state, with Narendra Modi visiting to promote the extremist brand of Hindu politics.
