PARIS, France: At the 142nd session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Paris, Saudi Ambassador to the US, Princess Reema bint Bandar, addressed the media scrutiny faced by Algerian Olympic gold medallist boxer Imane Khelif.
Speaking as a member of the IOC and an advocate for gender equality, diversity, and inclusion, Princess Reema emphasized the need for kindness and respect towards Khelif amid the controversy surrounding her victory.
Khelif, who won gold in boxing, has faced intense media scrutiny and online abuse, particularly related to misconceptions about her gender. Princess Reema, in her address, voiced strong support for Khelif and the IOC’s joint statement issued on August 1, affirming Khelif’s identity as a woman.
She expressed frustration over the ongoing misinformation and the pain it has caused Khelif, describing the continued misreporting as “unacceptable and absolutely heartbreaking.”
Princess Reema highlighted Khelif’s achievements, emphasizing that she, like other Olympians, has demonstrated exceptional determination, grit, and perseverance. She condemned the attempts to undermine Khelif’s achievements and dignity, calling them a collective failure to uphold the values of respect and equality in sports. The ambassador stressed that the focus should be on athletes’ performance and talents rather than their appearance or personal identities.
Addressing the broader issue, Princess Reema criticized the societal tendency to either overlook or misjudge female athletes based on superficial aspects rather than their accomplishments. She urged the public to reflect on their treatment of female athletes by considering how they would feel if the criticism were directed at their loved ones. Her call was not only for empathy but also for a recognition of the unique challenges faced by women in sports.
Princess Reema’s remarks came as a rallying cry for greater respect and support for female athletes worldwide. She emphasized that the Olympics should be a celebration of diversity and talent, advocating for an environment where all athletes, especially women, can shine without facing unnecessary criticism. Her message was a powerful reminder of the importance of dignity and respect in the world of sports.
