ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari has welcomed the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, terming it a landmark development with far-reaching significance for regional and global peace.

In his official message on Thursday, the President said the conflict that began in February 2026 had caused widespread human suffering across the region and severely disrupted global energy flows, trade routes, and overall economic stability.

He expressed the hope that such a period of turmoil would not be repeated, urging regional states to now redirect their focus towards development, prosperity, and the welfare of their populations.

President Zardari commended the efforts of Pakistan’s political and military leadership, paying tribute to Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for their “tireless diplomatic engagement” that contributed to facilitating the agreement.

He stated that Pakistan had maintained a “principled, balanced and constructive” stance throughout the crisis, consistently advocating dialogue, restraint, and peaceful settlement of disputes while remaining engaged with all concerned parties.

The President also appreciated the roles of US President Donald Trump, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and other Iranian leadership, including Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, for their commitment to a negotiated settlement and efforts to advance peace.

Acknowledging international cooperation, he thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Egypt, as well as Russia and China, for their diplomatic support and encouragement of dialogue during the crisis.

Calling for the swift and complete implementation of the Islamabad MoU, President Zardari urged all parties to adhere to agreed timelines and work towards a comprehensive and durable final settlement that ensures long-term regional stability.

“Heroes are those who have ended the war, not those who are eager to start one,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of peace over conflict.

He added that the agreement, which he said “has Islamabad and Pakistan written all over it,” should serve as a foundation for sustained peace, enhanced economic cooperation, and strengthened energy collaboration across the region.

“War brings nothing but destruction and misery. Peace is the only path to progress,” the President said, reaffirming that Pakistan would continue to stand alongside brotherly nations in their shared pursuit of peace and prosperity.
