President Tokayev Warns of High Terrorism Risks in Central Asia

ASTANA, Kazakhstan: President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, highlighted significant risks for Central Asia due to international terrorism during a meeting with the heads of Security Councils of the region’s countries in Astana.

Focusing on the issues of terrorism and drug trafficking, President Tokayev emphasized the importance of Afghanistan in the context of regional security. He noted that Central Asia continues to face substantial threats from international terrorist organizations, citing the recent terrorist attack in Moscow Oblast as an example of these ongoing dangers.

Tokayev identified the strategic need to actively involve Afghanistan in regional initiatives, stressing that coordinated efforts among Central Asian countries are crucial in this regard.

Moreover, he reiterated Kazakhstan’s proposal to establish a regional UN center on sustainable development goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan, a move aimed at bolstering regional stability and cooperation.
