BRUSSELS: A senior US State Department official has claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not make peace in Ukraine before 2024 US election, Western media reported on Tuesday.

As per media reports, former President Donald Trump, who is seeking reelection in upcoming US Presidential elections, has been sharply critical of Washington’s support for Ukraine.

A senior official told the reporters following a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels that the alliance reiterated its support and help for Kyiv knowing that a peace deal in the upcoming year is unlikely.

The officials told the reporters on the condition of anonymity that President Putin would not make a peace before he sees the result of US election. He said, “That was the background in which the allies all expressed strong help and support for Kyiv” in the NATO meeting on Tuesday, the official maintained, without mentioning former President Trump by name or explicitly adding how the polls result would affect support for Kyiv.

US President Joe Biden has given massive defense aid and other help to Ukraine since Russia’s February 2022 invasion, but additional funding for Kyiv is being held up by House of Representatives.

Ukraine’s President Zelensky earlier this month invited Donald Trump, who has said he could conclude the conflict in 24 hours if reelected, to Kyiv to see the scale of the war for himself.
