MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the current situation in the Gaza Strip as a “catastrophe” unfolding on a level that could not be compared to the Ukraine war. Russian President Putin expressed the comments during a press conference in Moscow on Thursday.
“Everyone here and across the globe can see and look at the special military operation and at what is taking place in the Gaza Strip and feel the difference,” President Putin said. He was of the view that there was nothing like this in Ukraine.
The fighting between Hamas and Israel — now in its 3rd month – started after the Oct, 7 surprise attacks on Israel by Hamas. Since Oct, 7 Israel has killed over 18,600 innocent Palestinians, mostly women and children, Gaza health ministry said.
President Putin Says Gaza ‘Catastrophe’ incomparable with Ukraine War
Russia has since February 2022 attacked Ukraine and taken large swathes of the south and east of Ukraine after fierce hostilities. The United Nations said that over 10,000 people have been killed in Ukraine war.
Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday told US President Joe Biden that it is Washington’s “historical responsibility” to ensure a permanent truce in the Gaza Strip immediately. Erdogan said a truce could be achieved rapidly if Washington withdrew its “unconditional support” for Israel. President Erdogan told Joe Biden that the human tragedy in the Gaza Strip should be prevented, and warned that prolongation of Israel’s assaults could have “negative regional and international consequences.”

The White House said Thursday that the United States (US) wants the Israel-Hamas conflict to end “as soon as possible,”. White House spokesperson John Kirby said that they all want it to end the conflict as soon as possible.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden said Israel’s “indiscriminate” bombardment of civilians was costing global support. Increasing civilian casualties in the Gaza has caused an increasing rift between the US and Israel. But during his trip to Israel, Sullivan had asked hard questions of Israel about the course of their attack against the Gaza Strip, added John Kirby.
