TASHKENT: Uzbekistan celebrated its 32nd Anniversary of State Independence on August 31 with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev delivering an inspiring speech highlighting the nation’s remarkable journey from independence to prosperity and development.
President Mirziyoyev extended heartfelt congratulations to the people of Uzbekistan on this significant occasion, emphasizing the nation’s unwavering commitment to its unique goals, course, and position as a sovereign state.
Addressing the Independence Day event, President Mirziyoyev remarked, “Your, my, everyday work, filled with love and devotion to the Motherland, further strengthens Uzbekistan’s independence. In this sense, it would be right to say that the holiday of independence is our common holiday, and independent Uzbekistan is our common pride and honor.”
He acknowledged that Uzbekistan’s path to sovereignty and current prosperity was not without its challenges, with the nation’s political and enlightenment aspirations gaining strength over the past century and a half. President Mirziyoyev also paid tribute to the heroes of the nation who, in their pursuit of freedom, faced repression and adversity.
“Before achieving independence, Uzbekistan’s abundant resources and potential were primarily harnessed for agriculture, particularly cotton cultivation. This policy had far-reaching consequences, including the drying up of the Aral Sea, an environmental crisis, and economic and educational challenges. However, significant reforms have since been implemented, leading to the eradication of forced and child labor in cotton cultivation and the revitalization of education and healthcare sectors,” Uzbek President said.
The President emphasized the importance of economic independence as the foundation of political independence. Over the past six years, Uzbekistan has experienced remarkable economic growth, with GDP increasing by over 1.5 times and the number of business entities doubling. Industrial growth has exceeded 40 percent during this period.
Uzbekistan’s Journey of Progress and Prosperity
However, President Mirziyoyev emphasized that progress should be measured not by past achievements but by future goals, urging the nation to continue working diligently to ensure sustainable development. Education, the President noted, plays a pivotal role in this progress.
The President highlighted the historical significance of Uzbekistan’s contributions to world civilization, including its material resources and intellectual accomplishments. President Mirziyoyev expressed confidence that the nation could continue this historical legacy by preserving its cultural heritage and fostering scientific and intellectual pursuits.
President Mirziyoyev outlined the pressing challenges facing Uzbekistan, including environmental issues, the transition to an environmentally responsible economy, and the development of innovative manufacturing enterprises. He underscored the importance of using natural resources wisely, considering the well-being of future generations.
Another key priority is ensuring equal opportunities for women in all sectors of society. President Mirziyoyev quoted Abdurauf Fitrat, a prominent historical figure, stating, “Women are the mothers of the nation,” and stressed the need to uphold this principle.
