ANKARA: President Tayyip Erdogan has said that Turkiye might enter Israel as it had done in the past in Nagorno-Karabakh and Libya, though he did not spell out what sort of involvement he was hinting.

Erdogan, who has been a fierce critic of Israel’s aggression in Gaza, started talks that war during a speech lauding his nation’s defense industry.

President Erdogan told a meeting of his AK Party in Rize, “We must be very strong so that Israel cannot do these ridiculous things Palestinians. Just like we entered Karabakh, Libya, we might do similar to them”. However, AK Party representatives did not reply to calls asking for more information on Erdogan’s statement. Similarly, Israel did not immediately issue any statement over the matter.

President Erdogan appeared to be referring to earlier actions by Ankara. In 2020, Turkiye had sent forces to Libya in support of the UN-recognized Government of National Accord of Libya. Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Al-Dbeibah, who leads the Government of National Unity in Tripoli, is supported by Turkiye.

Ankara has denied any direct role in Nagorno-Karabakh, but said last year it was utilizing “all means,” including military modernization and training to support its close ally in the region.
