President Biden Nominates Female Admiral to Lead American Navy

WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden has nominated Admiral Lisa Franchetti to lead the US Navy, a move that to break a gender barricade in the American military by making her the first female to command the US Navy.

The decision by the US is a surprise. The US Defense top officials had widely expected the nomination to go to Admiral Samuel Paparo. Franchetti, the vice chief of operations for the Navy, was among the candidates believed to be in the running for the position of to lead the American Navy.

In a statement, the US President noted Franchetti’s 38 years of experience.

“Throughout her career, she has demonstrated extensive expertise in both the policy and operational arenas,” President Biden said in a statement, noting that Franchetti was just the second woman ever to achieve the rank of four-star admiral in the American Navy.

Lisa Franchetti is not the first female to lead a branch of the US army. Earlier, President Biden picked Admiral Linda Fagan to lead the American Coast Guard.

However, the coast guard is not officially part of the Department of Defense and instead falls under the Department of Homeland Security, Reuters reported. Lisa Franchetti would become the first female to lead a military service at the Department of Defense as its chief.
