ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President, Dr. Arif Alvi, said on Monday that the labour force was the backbone of the country’s economy, adding steps should be taken for the protection of their rights by strictly enforcing the labour laws to discourage unfair labour practices in the country.
President Alvi’s Message on Labour Day
In a message on Labour Day, the President vowed to improve the working and living conditions of the working class in the country. He also paid rich tribute to the valiant and heroic struggle of the workers for their fundamental rights. He added that the day was not only a reminder of the struggle of workers but also an acknowledgment of their contribution towards economic progress and development.
He remarked that they believed the workers and employers were partners in the production process and their cooperation was essential for industrial efficiency that leads to socio-economic uplift of the society and country.
He also admitted that despite the contribution of the workers towards economic prosperity and progress, labourers were facing many problems like unsafe working environment, unfair labour practices, low wages, lack of job security, harassment of women at the workplace, long working hours and arbitrary dismissal.
He said, “Pakistan has a huge labour force and youth bulge that need to be provided modern and new skill sets to put the country’s economy on fast-track development and progress”. The President hoped that the federal and provincial governments would continue their endeavours to work for the welfare of the workers. He further said, “On this day, let us promise to dedicate ourselves to the prosperity, progress and glory of Pakistan”.
