ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi on Tuesday advised Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Haji Ghulam Ali to set a date for the general election to the provincial assembly to avoid further confusion and complication.
According to a press release by the President’s House, the K-P governor called on Dr Alvi and discussed matters related to the general election in the province.
“The president advised Governor Ali to implement the Supreme Court’s order in letter and spirit wherein it had been directed that the K-P governor, after meeting with the Election Commission of Pakistan, forthwith appoint a date for holding the general election to the provincial assembly to avoid any complication as almost two weeks had already passed,” the statement said.
It said that President Alvi emphasized the need for upholding the Constitution and holding the general election within the given timeframe, which the Constitution had mandated as it was essential for strengthening parliamentary democracy in the country.
While the date for elections in Punjab has been set for April 30, the date for the K-P assembly election continues to hang in the balance.
On March 1, the Supreme Court ruled that the elections to – Punjab and K-P assemblies should be held within 90 days. It had, however, allowed the ECP to propose a poll date that deviates from the 90-day deadline by the “barest minimum”, in case of any practical difficulty.
