BAKU: President Ilham Aliyev of the Republic of Azerbaijan has signed an Order declaring the year 2024 as the “Green World Solidarity Year” in the country. The Order emphasizes Azerbaijan’s active role as a reliable and responsible member of the international community, taking substantial steps to combat the consequences of climate change.

Underlining the nation’s commitment to environmental stewardship, the Order aligns with one of Azerbaijan’s key national priorities for socio-economic development until 2030: becoming a “Country of Clean Environment and Green Growth.” The document outlines ongoing initiatives aimed at improving environmental conditions, expanding green spaces, and promoting sustainable practices in water resource management and energy alternatives.

Azerbaijan’s Ambitious Targets to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Azerbaijan has set ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aiming for a 35% reduction by 2030 and 40% by 2050, relative to the 1990 baseline year.

Notably, areas including liberated Karabakh and East Zangezur, as well as the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, have been designated as green energy zones. The environmental protection agenda takes precedence in the extensive restoration and redevelopment efforts underway in these regions, incorporating innovative approaches like “smart city” and “smart village” concepts to contribute to ecosystem restoration.

In the realm of energy policy, Azerbaijan prioritizes the development of green energy sources and aims for renewable energy to constitute 30% of electricity generating capacity by 2030.

The Order also highlights Azerbaijan’s hosting of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). This decision reflects global recognition of Azerbaijan’s dedicated efforts in environmental protection and addressing climate change at national, regional, and international levels.

The Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan has been tasked with formulating proposals for an action plan related to the declaration of 2024 as the “Green World Solidarity Year.”
