KARACHI: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has called for timely elections to be conducted within the constitutionally mandated 90-day period.
In a Central Executive Committee meeting held in Karachi, former President Asif Zardari, and Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, alongside prominent figures such as Yousaf Raza Gillani, Nayyar Bokhari, Faryal Talpur, and Aitzaz Ahsan, discussed the country’s current political situations and emphasized that elections should be conducted within the stipulated timeframe.
During a subsequent press conference at Bilawal House, PPP Senator Sherry Rehman affirmed that there was no ambiguity about the requirement to hold elections within the 90-day timeframe. Rehman reiterated that the PPP delegation will engage with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ensure compliance with this timeline.
She underscored that as the seat distribution remains unchanged following the census, delays under the pretext of delimitation adjustments should not be entertained.
Rehman announced that a PPP delegation is scheduled to meet the Chief Election Commissioner on August 29 to discuss the upcoming elections and express the party’s concerns.
She highlighted the PPP’s stance that the census results were controversial and clarified that approving these results would not hinder the electoral schedule.
The Central Executive Committee meeting also facilitated an in-depth dialogue on prevailing political and economic dynamics. Attendees shared valuable insights and suggestions concerning the upcoming general elections. Notably, a consensus emerged among some members advocating for the completion of elections within the designated 90-day period.
Esteemed individuals like Amjad Advocate, Mohammad Ali Bacha, and Chingiz Jamali expressed their support for this viewpoint, prioritizing the conduct of electoral processes under favorable conditions. Legal aspects were addressed by Aitzaz Ahsan, who presented well-grounded arguments affirming the feasibility of organizing elections within the mandated timeframe while emphasizing the significance of upholding constitutional provisions.
