ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) secured twenty reserved seats for women in the Sindh Assembly, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) secured 36 seats in the Punjab Assembly, as announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan in a notification for returned candidates on reserved seats.
In the Sindh Assembly, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) will have six women lawmakers, while the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) secured one-woman seat. Additionally, the PPP secured six minority seats, and the MQM-P obtained two. The fate of one woman and one minority seat is pending, as the Sunni Ittehad Council also sought these reserved seats.
Parties’ position in Sindh Assembly
In terms of party standings in the Sindh Assembly, the PPP holds 113 seats out of 168, including those gained from independent candidates and reserved seats. The MQM-P is the second-largest party with thirty-six seats. For independent candidates backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who won thirteen general seats, decisions on their reserved seats are pending. The GDA and Jamaat-e-Islami secured three and one seat, respectively.
The inaugural session of the Sindh Assembly for the oath-taking of newly elected members has been scheduled for Saturday. Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori approved the recommendation of Caretaker Chief Minister Sindh Maqbool Baqar to convene the session.
Furthermore, the Election Commission of Pakistan also issued notifications for reserved seats in the Punjab Assembly. PML-N leads with 36 seats reserved for women, followed by PPP with three seats. PML-Quaid secured two seats, with one seat allocated to a woman affiliated with the IPP. The PML-N also secured five minority seats in Punjab Assembly.
