Power Generation Cost Rises in December

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s total cost of generating electricity increased nearly 18 percent, hitting Rs7.04KWh in December 2022 compared to 5.99KWh registered in November.

However, electricity generation cost decreased considerably by 14.5 percent on a year-on-year (YoY) basis.

Arif Habib Limited (AHL) said in a statement on Thursday that on a YoY basis, the decline in fuel cost in witnessed mainly due to a rise in nuclear and solar-based generation along with 14 percent YoY decline in coal-based generation cost.

It said that on an MoM basis, the rise in the cost of fuel is triggered by a decrease in a nuclear-based and hydel generation.

The power generation in Pakistan witnessed a marginal rise of 0.6 percent on MoM basis to 84,17GWh (11,313MW) in December 2022, as compared to 8,367 GWh in November. On YoY basis, the generation of electricity registered a drop of 4.7 percent compared to 8,828 GWh (11,866MW) witnessed in December 2021.

Power generation in first half of FY2023

During the first half of the Fiscal Year 2023, power generation also declined by 7.8 percent on YoY basis to 68,570 GWh (15,528MW) as compared to 74,369 GWh (16,847 MW) during the first half of the financial year 2022.

Moreover, the power generation cost during the first 6 months of the current fiscal year was up 27.8 percent from Rs7.14 in the same period of the financial year 2022.
