Pope Francis Hospitalized: Vatican

ROME: Vatican said on Wednesday that Pope Francis was admitted to a hospital in Rome with a breathing infection, which will need a stay of several days. Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni said in a statement that recently, Pope Francis has complained about breathing problems.

The pope was hospitalized in Rome’s hospital for medical checks, which discovered “a respiratory problem… that will need a few days of suitable medical treatment”, Bruni added. Earlier the Vatican said that Francis had been hospitalized for a previously scheduled medical checkup.”

A Vatican source told the media that the pope’s appointments for Thursday morning had been canceled. The Argentine pope suffers from long-lasting knee pain that has forced him to depend on a wheelchair in recent months.

Earlier, Pope Francis had also to cancel activities several times in 2022 due to the pain in his knee and in July 2022, in an interview admitted that he needed to slow down.

Pope’s health has been the subject of speculations and rumors, about whether he will follow the precedent set by his predecessor and give up work if he cannot continue. Benedict XVI shocked the world in 2013 by becoming the 1st pope since the Middle Ages to tender his resignation. Francis had said that he would also follow Benedict in stepping down if cannot do his job due to health issues.
