ISLAMABAD: In his last public event before flying home, Pope Francis called on people of South Sudan to end to “blind fury of violence”. On Sunday, the pope presided over a Mass in capital, Juba, which, according to the Vatican, was attended by as many as 100,000 people.

Francis pleaded to the South Sudanese people to refrain from the “venom of hatred” in order to attain the peace and prosperity that they have not been able to achieve during the many years of internecine ethnic conflicts.

FAO in South Sudan’s representative David Morrison posted the following video on Twitter:

Pope Francis concerned over continuing violence in South Sudan

Majority Christian South Sudan separated from Muslim Sudan in 2011; however, in 2013, a civil war broke out that killed 400,000 people.

Episodes of fighting have lingered on, and that has killed and displaced large numbers of civilians, despite a 2018 peace agreement between the two main foes.
