MEXICO CITY: A recent opinion poll suggests that Claudia Sheinbaum, the presidential candidate from Mexico’s ruling leftist party, the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), and a close ally of the current president, is poised for an easy victory in the 2024 election.

According to a survey conducted by polling firm Buendia & Marquez in conjunction with the newspaper El Universal, Sheinbaum, who previously served as the mayor of Mexico City, commands an impressive 50% of support in a competitive four-way race featuring top contenders.

Her primary rival, Xochiti Galvez, representing an alliance of opposition parties, trails significantly with just 20% of the vote. This outcome suggests the possibility of Mexico electing its first female president.

Approximately 19% of potential voters did not express a preference, while Samuel Garcia, the Governor of Nuevo Leon, who has not yet announced his candidacy, secured 7% of the vote. Independent candidate Eduardo Verastegui received the lowest support, with 4%.

Party preferences mirrored the individual results, with 53% of those surveyed favoring the left-wing MORENA party.

The poll, which surveyed 1,200 potential voters in late last month, carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.23% and a confidence level of 95% for the primary survey indicators.
