WARSAW: Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk on Thursday said that US Republican senators should be ashamed for blocking a $60 billion assistance package for Ukraine.

Republicans in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday defeated a bipartisan move to secure border security that had taken months to negotiate but said they could still approve assistance for Ukraine and Israel, which had been linked up in the deal.

Tusk, in a post on social media platform X, wrote: “Dear Republican Senators of America. Ronald Reagan, who helped millions of us to win back our freedom and independence, must be turning in his grave today.”

Poland has been one of Ukraine’s strongest allies since Russia started a war in 2022.

Ronald Reagan, former president of the United States, is known for taking a tough position against the Soviet Union, which he famously termed as the evil empire.

U.S. Republicans for months have insisted that any extra aid to Ukraine and Israel must also address the high numbers of migrants coming to the U.S-Mexico border.

Donald Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, has said he would request European allies to reimburse the United States for around $200 billion worth of arms sent to Ukraine.
