WARSAW: President Andrzej Duda of Poland announced on Tuesday that the country’s parliamentary elections will take place on October 15, 2023. The upcoming vote is of significant importance and will be closely monitored within the European Union.

Taking to Twitter, President Duda stated, “I have decided to call these elections for October 15, 2023. The future of Poland is a matter for each of us!” The announcement comes as the country prepares to elect lawmakers for both the lower and upper chambers of parliament.

The ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, known for its eurosceptic and nationalist stance, will be seeking its third consecutive term in office, following victories in the 2015 and 2019 elections. Recent polling indicates that the PiS is projected to secure the highest number of seats, with an estimated 33.4 percent of voting intentions according to an IBRiS poll from last week.

Political Parties’ Positions for Polish Parliamentary Elections

The liberal Civic Coalition, the largest opposition party, holds the second position in the polls, garnering support at 26.2 percent. However, predictions suggest that the Law and Justice party may fall short of securing an outright governing majority. This outcome could potentially lead to the need for a coalition government, with the far-right Confederation party emerging as potential kingmakers with 12.7 percent of voting intentions, as indicated by the IBRiS poll.

The parliamentary elections will play a significant role in shaping Poland’s political landscape and its relationship with the European Union, especially considering the Law and Justice party’s stance on issues such as the rule of law.
