ISLAMABAD: A polio vaccination drive concluded on Sunday in thirty-nine districts of Pakistan to vaccinate over six million kids under the age of 5.
The campaign was started following sewage samples tested positive in Lahore last month. The polio campaign was also carried out in D.I.Khan, Bannu, Tank, North Waziristan, Lakki Marwat, South Waziristan, Faisalabad and Lahore.
Polio vaccination drive
The campaign was designed following two environmental samples taken from two different sites in Lahore tested positive for poliovirus in last month.
The national polio lab at NIH said that the 1st positive sample of 2023 was reported on19th of January was linked to the virus discovered in the Nangarhar, Afghanistan in 2022.
This was the first case of cross-border transmission of polio virus in more than 12 months. Similarly, the 2nd positive sample was detected on January 27, which was genetically connected to polio virus circulating in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier a polio vaccination drive was carried out in Lahore in January, 2023.
