Police Officer Killed, Armoury Looted in Manipur

IMPHAL, India: A police official was killed in the Imphal West district of Manipur on Thursday and an armoury was looted in Bishnupur as the state witnessed fresh violence.

Police officer T Rishi was shot in the head during an exchange of fire with suspected militants in In Senjam Chirang, Imphal West. A villager was also wounded in the gunfight, according to Indian media.

A total curfew was reinstated in the area after it had been relaxed briefly.

Manipur has been witnessing ethnic clashes between the majority Meitei and Kuki communities since 3 May. At least 182 people, including 62 Meiteis and 113 Kukis, have been killed and about 60,000 have been dislocated.

Mob attacks in Manipur

The state has also registered several incidents of a mob attacking guard posts and looting weapons.

On Thursday, a mob, comprising nearly five hundred men and women, ransacked the Thangalawai and Keirenphabi polioce outposts in district Bishnupur looted armouries. Security forces fired at the mob and lobbed tear gas shells to control them, finally ending their attack at Singjamei and Heingang police stations.

In Imphal, another attempt was made to loot weapons. However, security forces foiled the attempt.
