LONDON: UK police fined Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday for traveling in his car without wearing his seat belt while shooting a social media video.
This comes as an embarrassing blow as Sunak tries to revive the fortune of his party.
Sunak shoots a video in the back seat of his car while traveling in northern England without wearing his seat belt.
It is the second penalty Rishi Sunak has received from police after last year police found him to have broken COVID-19 safety rules, along with then-prime minister Boris Johnson.
New challenge for Sunak
The fine represents a new challenge for Rishi Sunak, whose Conservative Party trails much behind the opposition Labour Party in the opinion surveys, ahead of an election at the latest by January 2025.
“Sunak fully accepts his mistake and has apologized for his mistake. He will definitely comply with the fixed penalty,” a spokesman for Sunak said in a statement.
Police in the north of England’s county of Lancashire confirmed that they had issued a man from London with a penalty notice.
Rishi Sunak becomes the second prime minister after Boris Johnson to have been fined in such a manner.
