WARSAW: Polish political leaders, officials, and diplomats have marked the 79th anniversary of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising.
President of Poland Andrzej Duda laid flowers at the monument to remember the sacrifices of victims of the German transit camp in Zieleniak, Warsaw district.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki during a memorial ceremony at the Warsaw Uprising Museum remembered the former President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski.
The Warsaw Uprising began on August 1, 1944, and thousands led by Polish Army joined the fight.

Before defeat to the Germans, Warsaw fought for 63 days. Germans later destroyed most of the city’s remains to the ground. The Red Army later took control of the city during its march on Berlin, and Poland remained under Soviet rule for half a century.
German embassy and consulates in Poland lowered their flags to half-mast to pay homage to the victims of the German transit camp.
The German embassy in a statement on social media said the anniversary of the start of the Warsaw Uprising, all German diplomatic missions in Poland lowered their flags to half-mast as a sign of mourning.
